Turn to the Sun – Growing hope for Africa
Suzy Coulter, a Registered Nurse who’s been working in the field of HIV for over 20 years in Vancouver, started Turn to the Sun in 2005, after returning from Kenya, where she volunteered at a government hospital for people with HIV and AIDS. Coulter remembers one woman who was HIV positive and had recently been widowed when her husband died of AIDS. Struggling to raise her eight children, she grew sunflowers, using the seeds to feed the family’s chickens. Her efforts inspired Coulter to grow and sell sunflower seedlings to raise awareness of the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS and to support those affected by the pandemic. Turn to the Sun has raised thousands of dollars for the Stephen Lewis Foundation. In 2010 and 2011, several Greater Van Gogos’ groups held sunflower seedling sales and formed a partnership with Turn to the Sun.
